It was delicious and was higher quality, that is all ye need to know on earth and all ye need to know (ode to John Keats).

Anyways past my English Romanticism about my burger and fries I should say I ordered this on Grubhub. I got the buffalo chicken fries and a Baa Moo Burger. So the burger was interesting. It had tots on it but the cheese did not work well with the burger, Gorgonzola cheese. It was too sharp I think to pair with a burger but what do I know other than John Keats poetry? The fries were outstanding though, the chicken was cooked well and the buffalo sauce complemented the cheese and it was so nice I ate it in a matter of a few bites totally bypassing the opportunity to enjoy the taste of the food.

The delivery driver was quite pleasant and on time.

After $4 tip and $2 delivery charge and tax it was about $30 which I feel even for LA was high but whatever I could have walked there and gotten some exercise but I choose to remain and loaf until it was dropped off at my hotel room door so you pay for convenience.

If you're ever been to Santee and Fashion District in DTLA, you know that it's surrounded by restaurants offering cheap eats. You probably even opted bites from a taco trailer or merely a hotdog grilled on a metal sheet around the corner.

Who would have thought that there's a Modern bar in Fashion District? I will be very honest to say that it's quite a surprise. It's elegant and beautifully furnished with arts all over from the dining room to the restroom.

On my way inside, I was met with a friendly greeting from the owner and bartender/server. I ordered the Spicy Chicken Sandwich with breaded chicken, coleslaw, pickles and buffalo sauce. I also had a side of garlic fries.

Both the sandwich and fries were served in a timely manner. Sandwich was good but the fries didn't taste any garlic at all. I actually had to ask the server to confirm if he indeed serve me with garlic fries. He confirmed it was. I decided not to say anything but on top of my head, I wanted to say "I want my garlic fries to have actual garlic period".

    [Review #364]
    2019 Yelp 100 Challenge (10/100)
    OTM Club 01/13/19-01/19/19

It was an ordeal to trek from the westside to DTLA, especially in the pouring rain. Driving nearly 20-mi. to Tipsy Grill for this week's OTM Club special: SPICY CHICKEN SANDWICH (chicken with spiced breadcrumb mixture, coleslaw, pickles, buffalo sauce).

According to previous patrons, the restaurant used to serve Mediterranean cuisine (probably just a couple of months ago), & is going through growing pains & transitioned to serving traditional American foods/burgers... so the chicken sandwich is inline with its current menu. I'm guessing the transition was recent because the menus were printed double-sided in plain copy paper. Are they still playing around with the menu? Hmmm. The OTM sandwich is slightly modified from the existing Crispy Fried Chicken Sandwich (fried chicken, coleslaw, pickled onion, dill pickles, chipotle aioli) by a different sauce & additional topping. I added some GARLIC FRIES as a side whereas their sandwiches are typically served with fries, salad, or soup.

It was a very late lunch & there was only 1 other couple in the restaurant. There's a wine bar-ish feel to the restaurant & plenty of open space (in some ways too open); the layout could use some work to make better use of the spaciousness. I love the piano, & wondered if it's used in the evening while patrons dined or just decor. :-)

Service was efficient, & my sandwich was served up fast. I could smell the vinegary buffalo sauce. The fried chicken wasn't really spicy & the buffalo sauce doesn't lend much heat. The chicken itself was thin, reminiscent of country fried steak & not that far off from that texture & taste. The cool coleslaw & pickles gave a nice contrast to the heat (hotness) from the chicken, & some additional texture. Instead of a flattened piece of chicken (which fries faster but leaves a drier product), they should serve a thicker cut of chicken breast for a juicier, more satisfying meal. Hit the spice meter with spicier condiments (ghost pepper, cayenne pepper, chipotle, etc.) & toppings (jalapeños, habanero, etc.) that will bring up the SHU, otherwise just call it a Buffalo Chicken Sandwich.

I was about finished my sandwich before the fries came out. They appear to be hand-cut & similar to In & Out's fries except these were slightly thicker. I like crispy fries with a mash potato consistency inside, but these weren't all that crisp. :-| And I didn't taste much garlic, & definitely didn't see any garlic. Usually you see minced garlic & chopped parsley in garlic fries... maybe these fries were tossed with garlic salt? :-| Tipsy Grill gave me a solid sandwich & just ok fries.

The restaurant doesn't have a private lot, but there are sufficient metered parking if you can find one (you would think in the pouring rain that there would be open spots nearby -- nope), or you can opt for the more pricier nearby public lots.

Tipsy Grill is still in its infancy & a work-in-progress... though the potential is there. Maybe par down the menu size & focus on a select few? TG just needs to find its identity & make a commitment with a permanent menu.

This place was bomb searching on yelp and find this spot gave it a try and did not disappoint at all.
Waiter was a nice girl. They used to serve Mediterranean food now they switched it up to more American style foods.

Ordered the threeeffle burger which was nice juicy tasty burger meat medium done so delicious.
Side order of parmassian truffle fries the fries are thicker fries then your regular skinny fries at other restaurants which was better I prefer.

We also ordered the classic burger with avocado which that was really good. Will come back when in the area to try more on the menu

I'll start off this review by saying that I'm pretty sure I visited Tipsy during their second week in operation. Openings are hard, and they're often messy, so take some of my early observations here with a grain of salt.

Even with that in consideration, know that Tipsy is a firm four star establishment that, with a couple tweaks, could be one of the best Mediterranean options in town.

Star 1: How were the service and atmosphere?

It seems to me as though Tipsy is still sort of figuring out what it is as a restaurant. First and foremost you've got burgers on the menu, so there's an air of casual that by default sort of identifies the place as maybe somewhere you wouldn't go on a first date.

However, step through the door at Tipsy and you'll find a slightly more formal setting with lots of contemporary white decor, a highlighted bar, and nice seating with pre-set tableware. It's impressive, but at the same time it's clashing with loud music and a television, so I'm back to thinking that maybe this isn't somewhere I'd take my girlfriend.

Tipsy is still hashing out the growing pains of table service, and before getting a menu I was asked three different times if I was dining in and whether I'd ordered. They'll get there. Once my order was placed my food came out maybe fifteen to twenty minutes later. Not a huge deal, but it was noteworthy given I was one of only two parties present on a Thursday evening. Star.

Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost?

Mediterranean comes at a premium these days, and I'm very much used to paying a whopping $15.99 for a Combo Kabob at one of many spots in town - notably Pita Cafe. I was expecting a similar price point for whatever the equivalent dish was here at Tipsy, and it turns out it's their 'Chef's Special', which weighs in at an impressive $22.00. Before you scoff, I'll point out that this was a mountain of food plain and simple. I subbed out the salmon so I ended up with four full skewers of chicken and beef with a ton of rice and a huge side salad. It's expensive, but it's worth it. Star.

Stars 3 and 4: How was the food?

So there's one thing I need to start out with here just as some constructive criticism. I'm a pretty typical white dude of European ancestry, and thus when I think Mediterranean, I think of two things: skewered meats and hummus. I think your average consumer is pretty similar to me, and that being the case, I'll plea with Tipsy to include hummus and pita bread with every dish. Sure, they bring out a little cracker and cream cheese appetizer, but we all want hummus, and I most certainly want it with my $22.00 Chef's Special. At the very least offer to sub hummus and pita in for the side salad.

Now that I'm off my soap box, I'll make a point to say that this was some seriously excellent food. The skewers were fresh and flavorful, the rice was fluffy, and the side salad was huge. I didn't necessarily expect to, but I absolutely loved it and can't wait to try their burgers and wraps. Two Stars.

Star 5: Would you eat here every day if you could?

For now, Pita Cafe is still my favorite, but if Tipsy can get a bit more comfortable with who they are as a restaurant, tighten up the service a bit, and include hummus with that Chef's Special? I'm all in. No Star.
